Pause, restart and watch what has already been on Print

Where your provider keeps a recording of a channel — often called catch-up or the archive — live television stops being something you can only join in progress.

Pause

Press Pause on a live channel and the app quietly switches to the recording, twenty seconds back. From that point it behaves like any recorded programme: pause properly, rewind, fast-forward. Go live returns you to the live edge whenever you want.

Restart

Restart plays the programme that is on now from its beginning — the usual answer to sitting down ten minutes late.

Anything from the last few days

Open the guide, move back a day or two, and pick a programme. It plays from the provider's recording. The TV guide, and moving between days explains the day strip.

The bar across the bottom

While you are inside a recording, the bar represents the whole programme, taken from the guide's own start and end times — not just the part that has downloaded. Halfway through an hour-long programme, the handle sits halfway along. Drag it and playback jumps to that moment.

Not every channel has this. Your provider decides which ones they record, and the app tells you plainly when a channel has none rather than letting the button do nothing. Pause and catch-up are unavailable on a channel covers that.
